He's about taking a weak French crown, mostly limited in its territorial resources to the Ile de France, to Paris and its immediate environs, and starting to build it back into a unitary authority, if we can use that term.

It seems like they're dragged into the orbit of an Anglo-French fight, Burgundy, Navarre, Flanders, Low Countries, and so on.

You can't understand history from one perspective alone, but you as a military historian, I would venture to say that war in particular is about having all of these viewpoints and perspectives going on at the same time.
So let's move back to that English perspective and try and make sense of Edward III's decision in the 1330s, early 1340s,
to claim the French crown.
Is it as simple as Edward III saying, well, hang on a second, if there's a crown up for grabs, I've got a blood right?
