I just... I'm glad we're having this because I think this is really important to have this conversation.

I'm profoundly uncomfortable with what happened with Burnham in Starmer.

Well, the fact that the Labour government, it started basically, I mean, there was other factors involved.

Wes Streeting walked out of his position as health minister, put a vote of no confidence.

Then they had a by-election where the Labour MPs stood down and then Burnham came in.

He won the by-election.

Starmer capitulated.

He's now in.

What about us?

Do we get a say in it?

Do we?

What's his mandate?

And now he's putting in policies that isn't even in...

The problem Burnham faces is the problem that faces the Labour Party and to the same or maybe even slightly lesser extent the Conservative Party.

You have within Labour this broad coalition of groups.

Everything from hyper-liberal progressives through to old-school lefties.

Then you've got the people who are the centre-left in the middle, sort of Lib Dem adjacent, let's just call them what they are, and everything else in between.

And Paul Embry we had on the show many years ago who made this point in that these people have relatively little in common with each other.

So in order to hold them all together, it is practically impossible or you need a Tony Blair-like, once-in-a-political-generation type of politician.
