Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday that President Trump's support for Pete Rose was a factor in the commissioner's decision to lift the lifetime ban against Rose and several other deceased ballplayers. The decision will allow a committee to allow Rose and others to be voted on for the Hall of Fame. A big change is also likely coming to MLB in 2026.

A federal judge is giving the Trump administration one week to figure out how more than 100 migrants who were sent to El Salvador in a prison there can challenge their deportations. As NPR's Tovia Smith reports, the judge says the migrants should have had that chance before they were removed from the U.S. under an 18th century law.
President Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone on Wednesday. The White House said Putin and Russia had very strongly, that Putin said Russia will very strongly respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attack on Russian airfields that reportedly destroyed or damaged much of Russia's long-range airborne nuclear fleet.
Trump described the call as a good conversation, but not one he said that will lead to a peace treaty. In a video call with the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group, Ukraine's President Zelensky said his country needs to push for more air defenses and weaponry to push Moscow towards real peace talks.

In Washington, stocks were mixed, and this is NPR News. A nationwide surveillance program is testing wastewater for evidence of measles in 40 U.S. states. NPR's Maria Godoy reports scientists hope the testing will boost public health officials in the ability to spot measles cases before an outbreak occurs.
President Trump's big push for a bill is likely to unleash trillions in dollars in tax cuts and slash spending, but it could spike the deficit by $2.4 billion and leave 10.9 million Americans without health care, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The U.S.
Coast Guard and other emergency response teams are cleaning up a fuel spill in Baltimore in the Inner Harbor area that took place on Wednesday. Now Johns Hopkins University says diesel fuel used for generators accidentally spilled by a vendor during a routine delivery and the fuel got into the nearby water. It was about 100 gallons of water. The water was red because of the dye from the fuel.

Carney was elected mainly on his campaign of being the best leader to deal with Trump. The two have already had a couple of phone conversations described as positive. Now, as Carney is set to arrive at the White House, some analysts are concerned that he set the right tone, a diplomatic balancing act where he and Trump can find common ground while Carney holds firm on Canadian sovereignty.
They fear the specter of the dressing down of President Volodymyr Zelensky when he visited the White House. Carney has already said the focus of the talks will be tariffs as well as the future economic and security relationship. Judy Messaline started her UFO watchtower as a joke 25 years ago after her ranching operation fell on hard times.
It's not much, basically just a steel viewing platform 10 feet off the ground and a gift shop. Still, she says people have been taking her joke a lot more seriously. This in the wake of declassified fighter pilot footage appearing to show UFOs. She expects about 10,000 people to visit the watchtower this summer, starting with a 25th anniversary party on Memorial Day.

Recent polls suggest Carney's Liberals are in a tight race with the opposition Conservatives, and this election campaign, only five weeks long, will focus on the main issue of tariffs and annexation talk from President Donald Trump.
Carney says in the past 10 days since he's become Prime Minister, he's initiated several major changes, including getting rid of the unpopular carbon tax and expanding dental care to more than 4 million Canadians. So Carney has asked for a strong mandate from voters in what he described as the most consequential election in a lifetime.

Victor Jennison, an attorney with the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund, says there was no way to know which ID number the state had on file until the ballots were rejected.
Jennison cited testimony at trial where the Texas Secretary of State conceded that more than 650,000 registration records in their system were incorrect. He added that expert testimony estimated that more than 2 million people were unable to vote due to the ID restrictions. The state of Texas is expected to appeal. I'm Dan Katz in San Antonio.
