Kearney suspended the negotiations in Washington just minutes before the deadline.
Fifty percent tariffs are now in effect against twenty billion dollars worth of Canadian products from honey and wine to cement to hockey sticks.
Kearney says he's directed his negotiators to return to Ottawa, adding that they worked hard in Canada's interests.
And he described last minute changes by the U.S.
as unfair, uneconomic, and call into question the reliability of any deal.
It's not clear yet what form Ottawa's retaliation will take.

For his part, Prime Minister Carney provided details to provincial leaders and personally asked them to bring back American liquor to store shelves as negotiators try to hammer out the final details of a deal.
That's been a hot button issue and major irritant for the White House.
Nova Scotia's Premier Tim Houston said he would be willing to lift the liquor ban.
Quebec's Christine Frischette wants more details, and Ontario's Doug Ford has already said he would do so if there is a fair deal.
