Ottawa's Minister of Canada US trade Dominic LeBlanc and his chief negotiator remained in Washington over the weekend, signaling the intensity of the talks over the next few days.
Sticking points remain the ban by most provinces on American liquor products, Canada's dairy quota system, and Canadian counter tariffs on US autos.
For its part, Canada wants to head off the additional fifty percent tariffs President Trump has threatened which are to kick in on Wednesday.
It also wants tariffs lowered or eliminated on steel and aluminum, autos, and forestry products.
If the talks fail and tariffs are imposed, Canada says it will retaliate.
US Trade Representative James Greer says Washington will not tolerate any retaliatory measures.
