Do they hang?
What happens?
Yeah.
Nobody knows because the people that deployed the fucking equipment out into production never tested this.
So they don't have a failure scenario.
They don't know what happens when you Nmap these things incorrectly.
And so for them it's fucking terrifying because you could, in some circumstances, legitimately cause natural gas explosions.
But in the course of this water district, the worst case is, oh, I accidentally piped sewage into the drinking water or something like that, depending on how things are arranged.
And so you take this person that has never touched computers before and you pay them peanuts and you send them off on a rental car to go do this assessment.
The customer may end up having to pick up the pieces because this person that's never done this before may wreck shop.
And so it's false sense of security as a service.
In many, many circumstances, like I'd say probably eight or nine out of ten times, when people go to a security shop asking them for work.
They don't necessarily give a shit about the result.
They are doing the absolute bare legal required minimum to get past their compliance stuff for the year.
And so they will ask questions like what can I get for two grand?
They will ask, what is the smallest scope that you're willing to do?
In many cases, a pen test, they call this a pen test, is aiming Nessus at one or two or three IP addresses on their WAN.
and then taking that report and putting a cover page on top of it and calling that a pen test.
A lot of the problem is also nomenclature because people that don't give a shit about security will say the word pen test.
That's not what they need.
