It's dash capital O is the command line flag to turn that on.
It's not on by default.
One of the things that Nmap does among the various tests that happen if you use that command line argument is nmap will fling intentionally malformed broken packets at the device to see how it applies.
Because
20 years ago, and this is still technically valid today, if you throw a fucked up ping or a fucked up TCP connection at a Solaris box, it will respond differently than a Linux box.
It will respond differently than a Windows box.
And so by flinging bullshit at the host, you can fingerprint what it is when the reply is back.
And I have not used the dash capital flag in trivially ten to fifteen years.
You don't even need it.
But the problem is that if you use that in a SCADA environment, flinging those fucked up malicious broken packets at PLCs will crash them.
They will hang and they will need to be power cycled.
The trouble with that eventuality is that if that PLC is doing something interesting, like for example, controlling a turbine that is pressurizing natural gas to a specific pressure so that it flows through a pipeline and then goes into a storage tank.
Or conversely, another PLC controlling another turbine that is depressurizing the same natural gas out of the same tank but going to a different turbine that is.
The burning one that ignites the fuel to spin to create electricity, and the exhaust of which goes to another turbine, which is controlled with another PLC, but that PLC is working in reverse.
That second turbine is being spun by the exhaust from the first, and that PLC is controlling what happens with that second turbine.
So if you N map this environment and you hit both of these PLCs, or let's say all three of these PLCs with the N.
Map dash capital O flag and they crash.
What happens?
Do they just spin to 100%?
Do they stop?
