DEF CON and Black Hat both fit squarely in the center of this.
When a conference is small and just getting started, the people that go to that conference are the ones that are passionate about the topic, right?
DEF CON in two thousand seven was like thirty five hundred hackers doing cool hacker shit.
and doing the most insane crazy nonsense with TCP that you'll ever see in your life at this DEF CON CTF.
This was the military would go and try to recruit people for the NSA from the DEF CON CTF because that's the caliber of people that participated in the CTF for fun.
But you fast forward to now f almost fucking oh my god, nineteen year Jesus fuck it's been nineteen.

In two thousand twelve I was working at Twitter on our security team and boy do I have stories about that.
But yeah.
At some point, the conference ceases to be a conference for the benefit of the conference goers.
It ceases to be a conference and it becomes a business.
And when it becomes a business, the point of the business is to make money.
And so you want to get as many people into the conference as humanly possible because every ticket you sell is profit.
