The before DEF CON was not done to make profit.
It was done so that hacker nerds could go meet other hacker nerds and do cool shit.
But it slowly morphed into a business, and now that it's a business
DEF CON's purpose and Black Hat's purpose is to sell as many tickets as humanly fucking possible.
So they will stoop to any length to do this.
They will lie, they will let Crown Sterling buy a speaking slot because that puts money in their pocket.
They'll let the press in, they will do sponsorship deals, they will have um you name it, anyway, any angle they can play that sees sponsors dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars.
Into them, or a company opting to send 200 of its engineers or other staff anything just to make that cash register noise fire.
And so I would say that before 2017, 2016, something like that, it could have been argued that DEF CON and Black Hat were still hacker cons worth going to.
But after 2017, after the Crown Sterling thing.
It was very firmly.
No, the needle has hit the ground on the other side of the meter.
It is now just another conference.
I have been describing DEF CON as it's a hacker flavored Comic Con.
You go, you get your little lightsaber, you get your Mickey Mouse ears, you get your bag of swag, you get your nineteen dollar smoothie, you see the cool hacker on stage do a backflip, and then you go home and you tell your friends about it.
That's the th they call it hacker summer clip.
That's what it is now.

Yeah, I guess if you just I guess the way to get that sort of reputation, as I'll describe for you exactly how I got it, was complaining about frauds loudly, often, and occasionally doing something that you think is cool that you don't give a shit about anybody else's opinion on.
