It was dawn, actual grey daylight, frost on the grass, my breath fogging in front of my face.
Which was its own impossible thing, because I'd gone into that room a little after midnight, and I have never been able to account for the hours.
And behind me, up in the dark window I'd just torn open, I heard the door of that little room click and swing open, slow and unhurried, the way a thing opens a door when it already knows it's too late to matter.
I ran to my car and I drove and I did not stop for an hour and when I finally did stop it was at a gas station in full daylight and I sat in the parking lot shaking for 20 minutes before I trusted my hands on the wheel again.
I went back a week later in daylight with two other people and the county historian because I needed to understand the staircase.
I needed there to be a hallway.
We found the storage room easily enough from the outside, and the broken window was right where I'd left it.
The board splintered outward exactly where I'd hit them.
The two iron bars snapped off and lying in the grass below.
The camcorder was still inside on the floor where I dropped it going through, and it still worked just enough to play back the last thing it had recorded.

The historian walked the upstairs hall with the original blueprints open in his hands and confirmed slowly what I already knew and didn't want to hear.
There is no narrow corridor on that floor.
There never was.
the upstairs hall is wide and short and runs straight from the bedrooms to the landing and the main stairs i ran down a passage that the house does not contain into a room i reached through a door that shouldn't connect to it and i came out the other side i don't debunk things alone anymore
I'll tell anyone who asks that I changed my mind in that house completely in the space of about 90 seconds after 11 years of being sure.
I've still got the camcorder with the dent in it and the snapped bars and the broken boards for the part of the story that can actually be proven.
The voice and the breathing in the hallway I can't prove and I've stopped trying to.
People can believe me or not.
But I know what I heard, and I know that it was wrong about exactly one thing.
