Not one bar.
I'd had four bars in that same house an hour earlier, downstairs.
Now there was nothing.
In a room that according to every plan I'd studied should not have existed.
For a few seconds I just stood there in the pitch dark with my back against the door and listened to my own heart going.
And then, into the silence, I heard it breathing.
right next to me right in my ear close enough that i should have felt the air of it on my skin but didn't a slow wet patient breathing that was not mine and was not coming from any direction that little room could account for
It wasn't in front of me, or behind me.
It was just there, at the level of my ear, breathing like it had all the time it could ever want.
That is the closest I have ever come in my life to my mind, simply switching off, to the lights just going out behind my eyes.
I think if it had lasted another ten seconds, I'd have gone somewhere I wouldn't have come back from.
What saved me wasn't courage.
I want to be clear about that.
Because people have called me brave for this and I wasn't.
It was the adrenaline finally overriding the terror.
My body deciding to act because my brain had run completely out of anything useful to offer.
i still had the camcorder in my hand four pounds of cracked metal and dead electronics the same thing that had been thrown across the landing by nothing at all i turned to the window brought it up over my shoulder and swung it down on the rotted boards as hard as i have ever hit anything in my life
The wood was soft with decades of damp, and it gave on the third swing, splintering inward, and the iron bars behind it were so far gone with rust that two of them snapped clean off when I got my hands around them and pulled.
The breathing was at the back of my neck now.
i went through that window head first and i did not care in the slightest what was on the other side of it it turned out to be a slope of wet grass and about a six-foot drop and i hit it shoulder first and rolled and the cold of the ground was the most welcome thing i have ever felt against my body
