I need to be careful here because I know exactly how this sounds and I've had a lot of time to doubt my own memory of it.
But I'd been up and down that main staircase twice already that night.
I knew where it was.
I turned to go down it and instead I ran into a hallway and the hallway was wrong.
It was narrower than any hall in that house, narrow enough that my shoulders nearly brushed both walls at once, and the farther I went the narrower it got, tapering down ahead of me, the walls closing in by inches the way a funnel closes, leading me somewhere.
There is no such hallway in that house.
I'd seen the blueprints.
I'd walked the floor.
It wasn't there, and I was in it, running, and I could hear it behind me.
Not footsteps, not exactly.
A heavy dragging pressure, the sound of air being shoved through a space that's filling up with something solid, getting closer in a slow, patient way that was somehow worse than fast would have been.
I didn't look back.
I've thought a lot about why I didn't look back and I think it's because some part of me understood that looking wouldn't help and might be the last thing I did.
Every door I passed in that impossible hallway was either painted shut or opened straight onto a brick wall behind it.
I tried four of them at a dead run, throwing my weight against each one without slowing down before the fifth one finally gave and I went through it and slammed it shut behind me and put my whole body against it.
The room was maybe six feet square, a storage room, no furniture, nothing in it at all.
One window, high up on the far wall, with rusted iron bars across the outside and rotted boards nailed up behind the bars from the inside.
two doors the one i'd come through and another in the corner both with old mortise locks and when i tried the corner one it was locked solid and i had no key i checked the door i'd come through and somehow it had locked too behind me though i hadn't touched the lock and i have no idea how it had even opened in the first place
I pulled my phone out with a shaking hand.
No signal.
