The latches were for us, to make us feel better.
They meant nothing to whatever was in that cabin.
I have to tell about Devin now, about how he changed over those last hours.
Because that's the heart of it, and it's the hardest part to put down.
He went quiet after the ladder came down.
Not the easy welder's quiet I knew.
The comfortable silence of a man who didn't need to talk.
This was a different quiet, a listening quiet, a quiet like a man hearing something the rest of us couldn't.
He sat in the chair nearest the window, the one that looked out at the lake, and he stopped drinking his beer, and he stopped looking at us, and he started looking out at the water.
The window was black.
There was nothing to see out there but our own reflections and the dark.
But Devin looked out at the lake like there was something out there looking back, and his face had gone smooth and empty, the way it had been that first morning when I found him on the floor with his eyes open.
Around midnight, Devin got up out of the chair and walked to the door and put his hand on the latch.
He was going to go outside.
Into the rain, because it had started raining by then.
Soft at first, and then harder.
Real rain.
Drumming on the green metal roof.
And I remember thinking with a cold lurch that the old man had said the loft leaked when it rained, and now it was raining.
