And I wondered what was happening up in that loft in the dark with the rain coming through.
But Devin was at the door with his hand on the latch and Cole got to him and pulled his hand off it and steered him back to the couch and Devin let himself be steered loose and unresisting like a sleepwalking child.
He sat back down and a few minutes later he got up and went to the door again.
We took turns watching him after that.
One of us awake at all times, that was the plan, sitting between Devin and the door.
And we would make it to first light and then we would put him in the truck and we would leave and never come back.
That was the whole of our plan, to keep our friend away from the door until the sun came up.
The rain came down harder, the fire burned.
Devin sat on the couch with his eyes open, looking at the black window.
and every so often he would say something low not to us once he said it's cold down there once he said he's been alone a long time and once near two in the morning he turned and looked right at me and for a second his eyes were his own again scared and his own and he said very clearly don't let me go in the water
and then the smoothness came back over his face and he turned back to the window and that was the last clear thing my friend said to me that night i have thought a lot about what was in that loft and about what it wanted and i have read what little there is to read about the cabin and the family that built it
The old man Voss had owned it for a long time, but he wasn't the one who built it, and he wasn't the one who lost the boy.
That was an earlier family, a logging family from the 30s, and they had a son, and the son slept in that loft, up under the green roof where it was always a little warmer than the rest of the house.
And one summer, the boy went down to the lake and swam out too far, the way boys do, and the cold took him.
The way the old man on the dock had said it does.
Fast.
The cold seizing the muscles.
And he went under, and he didn't come up.
And they dragged the lake, and they never found him.
600 feet of water just a few degrees above freezing.
