The lake doesn't give them back.
I don't think the cabin was haunted, not the way we mean it.
I think the old man on the dock had it right.
A ghost is a person who left something behind, and that boy didn't leave anything behind.
He was all still here, all of him, down in the cold water that does not let go.
And the loft was where he had slept.
warm and dry under the roof, and I think the loft remembered him, and I think the lake remembered him, and I think the two of them together had been waiting up under that green roof for a very long time for someone to climb the ladder and lie down in the warm spot and sleep where the boy had slept, not to be haunted by, to be taken.
The cabin wasn't trying to scare us.
The cabin was trying to fill an empty bed.
It had lost a son to the lake, and it had been alone a long time, and it wanted him back, and it didn't much care that the man it was reaching for was named Devin, and had a mother in Aberdeen, and big welder's hands and a life.
It just wanted to walk him down to the water and let the cold keep him, the way the cold kept the boy, so that they could be together down there in the dark and the cabin wouldn't be empty anymore.
The lake doesn't give them back, but I think the lake will always take more.
And I think the cabin had learned how to feed it.
I lost the watch near dawn, that's the only word for it.
I was the one awake, sitting between Devon and the door with the fire low, and the rain had been coming down for hours, and the sound of it on the roof was steady, and heavy, and warm.
And I was so tired, the deep two months of bad sleep tired, that I had come up to the lake to fix.
And I closed my eyes for just a second, just a second.
