They rang the bell, and the men didn't come.
The snow was too deep, and the wind took the sound and threw it the wrong way.
Or the men were already lost, nobody ever knew.
They rang it for two days.
And on the second night, she said, dropping her voice though we were the only two people in the building.
The cook claimed that the bell answered him.
That when he rang it, something rang back, from out in the storm, from the direction of the far cut.
And he kept ringing because he thought it was the men, signaling that they were coming in.
And the answer kept getting closer.
The men were never found alive.
When the snow let up in spring, they found most of them, what the winter and the animals had left, scattered along the hall road, as though they'd been walking in, toward the camp, toward the sound of the bell, and hadn't made it.
But there was a story the cook told, before he left the country for good and never came back.
that the thing that had answered his bell that second night the thing that came closer and closer through the storm was not the men the men were already dead by then it was something that had heard the bell calling and had answered the call and had come the way you come when you're called
And after that, Eleanor said, folks said the camp bell was cursed, and when the camp was abandoned, somebody was supposed to have taken it down and buried it, or sunk it in the drainage, so it could never call anything again.
I asked her, and I tried to keep my voice level, whether anyone had ever lived up on the bench above that camp, whether there had been trouble there.
She looked at me for a long moment.
She said the man who'd owned that bench for the last 50 years had come into the historical society exactly once, years back, and asked her the same questions I was asking, in the same careful voice.
And she'd told him what she'd just told me.
And he'd gone white, she said, and thanked her, and left, and she'd never seen him again.
That was my uncle Lowell.
