And I understood, sitting in that little overheated room full of maps, that Lowell hadn't written those rules out of an old man's paranoia.
He'd written them because something had happened to him up there once.
That taught him the rules.
He'd learned them the way you learn a stove is hot.
And the most important rule, the one he'd bolted to the wall with four lag bolts and underlined with no matter what you hear, was about a bell.
I bought nothing else.
I drove back to the cabin as fast as that two-track would let me.
Wesley wasn't right when I got back.
I could see it the moment I came through the door.
He was sitting at the table with the camp map I didn't know he'd found, an old folded thing he'd turned up in a drawer while I was gone, Lowell's own copy, and he had that look people get when they've been alone too long with a bad idea.
I told him everything Eleanor had told me.
The camp, the storm, the bell, the thing that answered.
I expected it to scare him the way it had scared me.
Instead, it did something worse.
It lit him up because Wesley had heard the bell again while I was in town.
In the daylight, he said, just once, around two in the afternoon from down the drainage, closer than the night before.
And instead of frightening him, it had pulled him.
The way a question pulls you when you can't stand not knowing the answer.
And he'd spent the afternoon walking down toward the old road grade trying to find the source.
And he'd found, he told me, that the closer he got to the bottom of the drainage, the more he felt like he was almost remembering something.
