and that under the ring there was something else, a sort of dragging, a heaviness in how it moved between rings, as though whatever carried it was carrying a great weight and was in no hurry, because it had all the time it needed.
It rang three times that night, with long gaps between, and each ring was closer than the last, and between the second and the third, Wesley got up and went to the back window, the window with the tape that said, ''Do not open, not even a crack.''
and he put his face close to the glass and looked out into the dark.
And I crossed the room and took him by the shoulder and pulled him back.
And he let me, but he didn't want to.
His eyes when he turned to me weren't all the way his.
"'It sounds like him,' he said.
"'Like who, Wes?'
