And it called you with it.
For the men in the storm it had been the camp.
Warmth and food and rescue.
For Wesley it was his dead father.
It had been listening to us for three nights, and it had found the door in Wesley and it was standing outside that door now, ringing, and Wesley wanted to answer.
I got him to bed.
I sat up the rest of the night between him and the back window with the fire poker across my knees, which I knew even then was useless.
You don't fight a thing like that with a fire poker, but a man holds something.
The bell didn't ring again before dawn, but near the end of the night, in that last cold dead hour before the sky starts to gray, I heard, out beyond the back wall, much closer than 200 yards, a sound that was almost a voice, low and patient and shaped like a word.
I won't write the word.
It was a name, and it wasn't mine, and I knew whose it was, and I put my hands over my ears like a child, and I waited for the light.
