I could feel the weight of it through the boards, and it was using the voice it had built, his father's voice, low and warm and close, calling Wesley by his childhood name, the name only his father used, and Wesley was halfway to the door before I caught him.
He wanted to open it, he wanted to let his father in.
The thing had him almost all the way, and it was sunrise, and I had seconds, not minutes, and my cousin was between me and the bell with both hands trying to get to the door.
so I did the only thing I could do.
I let go of trying to hold Wesley and I went around him.
I got to the bell.
He grabbed at me and I took one elbow to the mouth that loosened a tooth I still favor, and I got my hand on the rope, and outside the voice rose, no longer warm, the warmth all gone out of it at once, a sound underneath the voice now that was not a voice and had never been a voice.
and I pulled the rope, hard, once.
The bell rang, bright and small and clear, the same warm note it had given the night Wesley flicked it.
The night this all began, and the note went out of the cabin and into the grey morning, and for a single second there was absolute silence.
The woods, the porch, Wesley, all of it dead still.
And then the answer came.
It came from directly beneath us.
From under the porch, under the boards, under our feet.
