The thing had been that close.
It had been right under the floor we were standing on.
The same heavy bronze toll I'd heard for three nights coming up the valley.
But now it was below me.
so close the floor hummed with it and it rang once one enormous answering note that i felt in my teeth and in the loose tooth and in the soles of my feet through the boards and then it stopped the note rang out and faded and did not come again and the weight under the porch the weight i'd felt through the boards lifted
The way a held breath lets go, and the morning light came up through the windows another shade brighter, and the woods, when I finally made myself open the front door and look, were ordinary woods.
Wet, cold, grey, empty.
Hemlocks and bare hardwood and the old road grade somewhere down below, holding its dead.
Nothing on the porch.
Nothing under it when I made myself crawl under there an hour later with a flashlight.
Nothing but old dry dirt and a few generations of mouse nests.
And, set into the ground directly below where the bell hung on the wall above.
Half sunk in the dirt.
Green black with age.
The curved bronze top of a very large old bell.
Buried there a long time ago by somebody who'd wanted it gone.
And hadn't been able to make it gone.
Only quiet.
Lowell had built his cabin on top of it.
