I mean, the campaign kicked off with, they had a campaign bus, which they were all very excited about, and unfortunately when the stickers came to put on the bus, they'd spelt his name wrong.

So he didn't really have a reach outside of the party, he didn't have a reach inside the party, so it just didn't work.

Then 2015, he was the frontrunner.

I did the first interview with him, his launch interview, I suppose.

But he fought the wrong election.

He came out saying, Ed Miliband has lost to the Conservatives.

The big criticism on the doorstep was Labour spends too much money.

So he went into this campaign saying, I'm fiscally disciplined.

Remember, I was Chief Secretary of the Treasury back in 2007.

Remember how tough I was and how effective I was in keeping spending down.

Let's get rid of this mansion tax nonsense.

That's kind of a politics of envy, the stuff that Ed Miliband was talking about.

let's be tougher on immigration.

And this was all stuff that the Labour Party membership just did not want to hear.

So he was fighting the wrong election.

He was fighting a general election, trying to speak to the wider public, when he should have been trying to speak to Labour membership, which was of the left.

And, of course, then also Ed Miliband had changed the rules of the election so that if you paid £3, you could become a voting member, you could vote in this election.

The far left, lots of people from the Conservative Party thought, right, well, that's three quid.

I can scupper this election or vote for a candidate that wouldn't normally win.
