Yeah, I mean, it's a funny job, the mayor job.

There's not a lot of powers to it.

You've got convening powers.

You can regulate the buses as it has done.

But the key thing is being sort of the head of the city or the region, being someone who can speak on behalf of that region in battles with London.

And COVID obviously presented the absolutely perfect battle.

It made sense to say, well, just a minute, no, you're treating us very poorly, putting us in lots of lockdowns when they're not necessary.

You're not thinking about our local economy.

And he did it very well.

And it also fed into what he does and has always believed in that politics in Britain is London-centric, that there are not enough people from the north of England involved in very senior positions in British politics.

There's a sort of snobbery around it.

So it was authentic.

It's kind of him shouting at Boris Johnson, doing those press conferences saying this is unacceptable, this is not how it should be.

It came from a place of authenticity.

This isn't running the country.

He was extremely popular.

That was genuine.

Also, I would push back on anyone who says that it was a cynical thing for him to go in for this.

He wanted to do something with his life and he wanted to enact change.

I'm not entirely sure they are convinced that he is the man.
