He accepted, while lots of others decided not to.

I mean, that caused a lot of friction with lots of friends of his, Jewish friends particularly.

You know, Corbyn got embroiled in all the anti-Semitism, the scandal, and lots of his Jewish friends said to Andy, you know, this is outrageous, you shouldn't be in this team.

But he felt he had to do it.

I mean, he was miserable.

saying things that were just slightly supportive of Putin and all sorts of things which put him in a bad position and he wasn't enjoying it.

The opportunity came sort of early to 2016.

His mate, Steve Rotherham, was going to go to be mayor of Liverpool metro area.

And he was like, you should try for Manchester.

He was torn a bit because Westminster had been his life.

He talks about how he sort of started falling out of love with Westminster in 2009 when he'd gone to Anfield and spoken to the crowd there about the Hillsborough and he got booed.

And he said, from there on, I always felt that actually Westminster wasn't answering to the appetite of the British public, didn't understand the man on the street.

There was perhaps some truth to that.

But also his career was going nowhere.

He probably saw that Labour was going to lose the next general election.

And where does that leave him?

So he decided to go for mayor of Manchester.

And that wasn't particularly well received by a lot of people in Manchester because it was felt like, well, you've just given up on Westminster because you don't care about Westminster, but it's not gone right there for you.

And now you're forcing yourself on Manchester.
