When I was an analyst for a company called Goodman Field Awati, so this is the father of the CEO or starter of Goodman Group, and it was a big baking company, so they used to make all the breads, blah, blah, and they wanted to take over a company called Ranks Hover St Dougal in the UK.
Anyway, I sat all afternoon combining recipes
the P&Ls and the balance sheets.
And I did it, must have done three times.
And eventually I called in a really top rated analyst.
His name was actually Owen Evans.
And that's why I get confused sometimes between Evan Lucas and Owen because I had a mate called Owen Evans.
And I go, Oki, his name was, and shout out to Oki if you ever listen to these, because he was the most amazing number cruncher I've ever seen.
I go, check my numbers, because I said this company can't do this.
Anyway, I got asked by the Asian Wall Street Journal.
I said, no, it would be geared to the eyeballs.
Guess what happened?
They couldn't.
The acquisition never happened.
It was a flight of fancy during a bull market from the managing director and some of the directors.
So gearing, gearing, gearing, really, really important because interest rates are going up.
Companies need to refinance.
The same as if you're coming off a fixed loan mortgage and you go to a variable home loan mortgage, you are going to not have as much cash flow.
Great examples.
The other really good, I think it's a good example.
