What if you really were honest about that? I hope that these episodes on purpose are connecting to you. Hope that I've presented a notion, a concept of purpose that is nuanced and maybe even complicated. I like to joke that there are two different types of teachers. There's teachers that help students understand complicated things in the world and they make them simple and accessible.
And I like to joke that I'm the sort of teacher, I'm the second sort of teacher, who takes the everyday, the things that we think are simple, and I complicate them in ways that I hope expands them and helps you relate to those things in a new way. There's so many ways that I think we have romanticized purpose and treated it as a really good thing all the time, and it is. But when you recognize that purpose is
is complicated, it is nuanced, and you might have different relationships with purpose, it allows you to be more intentional and thoughtful about how you are relating to purpose in the phase that you are in.
One of the things that I've been thinking about as I've been moving through this is ways in which we've also defined purpose as a destination. I have this purpose and if I do X, Y, Z, I will fulfill my purpose. And I think that what is tricky is that purpose isn't always a destination. It's certainly not always a fixed destination. And so I've been thinking about purpose as a practice.
And that's what we're going to be talking about next episode. So if that sounds like something that you're interested in, I would love to connect with you all in other ways. Jump on to LinkedIn and connect with me there. DM me, send me an email if you're interested in Simply Bold. I would love to do actually a free coaching session for you so you can get a sense of what it might feel like and determine if that was something that you're interested in. So reach out to me. I'd love to make that happen for you.
I want to start with someone I know, and I'm going to call her Mara.
Mara is really good at what she does.
She lights up in a meeting.
She is the person who does extra reading, who feels called to the work in a way that most of the people around her don't.
She has a career that means something, a title that reflects her values, and a reputation for doing the important stuff.
Y'all, she is also quietly one of the most exhausted people that I know.
Not in the way that burnout looks from the outside.
She's still showing up.
She's still delivering.
She's still saying yes to the right things.
She took a long weekend in the spring and got some sleep, protected her time.
But she came back and it wasn't long before she started feeling the same way again.
And what she described to me wasn't tired.
It was a lower register hum.
A sense that no matter what she accomplished, she was somehow coming up short.
