And there's a version of demoralization that's even harder to see.
And it's the one that happens when you care deeply.
When you're not stuck in work that feels meaningless.
When, in fact, you've built a life and a career that you believe in.
And that's where I want you to go today.
Because for a lot of the women that I work with, for a lot of high-achieving women...
Purpose isn't the anecdote to burnout, it's oftentimes the mechanism.
So here's what I mean.
When purpose is working right, when it's functioning in the way that it's supposed to, it gives you direction, it creates meaning, and it makes the days easier because you know why you're in them.
But there's a version of purpose that maybe goes a little too far.
It stops functioning as a compass and starts functioning as a measurement system.
So every day kind of gets run through it.
Your decisions, your conversations, every outcome gets evaluated against the same sort of underlying question, was this meaningful enough?
And that's a harsher standard than did I get through today.
So often I have women come to me and they're like, hey, I want to do some goal setting because I feel a little scattered.
I feel a little directionless.
But they're really nervous to set goals
because they really associate goals with pressure.
And they know that the moment that they set the goals, they're going to put pressure on themselves to do that thing in a very particular way.
And the same thing I think happens with purpose.
