Early on, which I don't think it's conspiratorial to think that gave them an extra motive to make their business vastly bigger.
And there's layers to the league's stake in the gambling business that even goes beyond that.
One that I think is so alarming is that the leagues have a stake in these companies that are the so-called integrity monitors that are charged with flagging and investigating suspicious bets, bets that shouldn't be placed.
Considering that those companies have partial owners who are the leagues themselves, that's a huge conflict of interest.
Not only that, but their bigger business isn't integrity monitoring.
It's facilitating online bookmaking by distributing the data that allows real-time betting.
So there is such a disincentive for them to expose something that would profoundly damage the betting business and the leagues for being a part
of it.
For a while, I was reluctant to make that comparison just because it's so inflammatory and people really freak out when you say that.
I think the advertising is the most undeniable comparison.
There's actually a group at Northeastern Law School that were instrumental in exposing industry practices in the tobacco business, and now they've...
set their sights on sports betting.
And they made that comparison.
I felt it was pretty convincing that the way celebrities and just beloved people are pushing this, saying it's harmless, suggesting to kids that it's just the thing that adults do or that people do, that has such echoes of how tobacco used to be advertised.
That would have been smart.
I did talk to someone who did.
He was starting a telehealth company and he wanted to investigate what exactly is out there for people.
Maybe he has a little bit of a motivation to say it's terrible because his company is filling a supposed void.
