Who are we kidding?
Yeah, I don't want to sound like a broken record with...
the arguments for legalization.
I do think it's worthwhile though to assess them in light of what's happened.
One of the main arguments was it would drive out the black market, that if you could bet legally, why would you bother going to a bookie or some sketchy website?
That has not happened.
One credible estimate I think is that about $50 billion continue to be wagered illegally.
That might be baffling, even beyond the states that have it legalized.
Why are people in states with legal betting betting illegally?
There will always be some inherent appeals to going under the table, betting anonymously, betting on credit, betting on things you can't bet on through licensed operators.
But again, the idea that we would drive this out through legalization was...
either naive or disingenuous.
And when we're talking about corrupting sports, they said the legal market will give us this huge window into betting activity.
I spoke with all sorts of people inside sports, including at the companies that monitor those bets.
And they say, if we had a real sophisticated fixer and a gambling syndicate working with them, they would obviously still go through the black market.
And we would have such a difficult time catching that.
So that problem by no means has been erased.
Yeah, it's like, in a way, legalization is like laying a trap for really stupid people.
