And yet a lot of, I get the sense that a lot of people in sports are walking on eggshells when they talk about gambling.
Maybe their friends are doing ads.
Maybe they might wanna work in media and realize- There's too much money involved.
Look, I mean- Yeah, it's that simple.
Right.
I'm concerned about being complicit in promoting gambling through those ad deals.
I'm maybe even more concerned about how it might cause journalists to think twice about covering something that would embarrass the sports books and the leagues for doing business with them.
And, you know, sometimes I can feel like a sort of a J school debate, like to ads.
I won't even be a J school debate.
No question.
Someone at ESPN said the unspoken rule in the newsroom for so long was you can sort of reference gambling, but don't do anything that'll F up our deals with the leagues, which meant don't push gambling too much because the leagues didn't like gambling.
Now it's the other way.
Right.
Don't say anything bad about gambling because it'll F up our deals with the leagues.
Another former ESPN reporter said,
It's as if sports media is being bribed by all this advertising, that they're not covering things they might.
They're biting their tongues, pulling punches, you know, choose your metaphor.
