So Gilbert is a made man of the 70s boat trade, one full career of it already behind him.
And since 1980, he has not filed a single tax return, which is interesting, because he soon makes a down payment on a Pennsylvania farm, $165,000 in $20 bills, duffel bags full of bills.

Gilbert's job is receiving the load, the boat.

It crosses the ocean and then smaller American boat picks up the product and brings it to shore.
And the first boat Thomas Gilbert lines up is a vessel called the Northern Lights.
And to vet the choice, the crew brings in another boatman from Massachusetts, Peter Underwood, 31 years old.
He helps arrange the
offloading situation and the initial storage.
But then Gilbert gets a tip, and the tip is that the Northern Lights is on a Coast Guard watch list under surveillance as a suspected smuggler's boat.
So the Northern Lights is out.
The replacement is another boat called Sandra and Cindy, the working trawler from our Cold Open, captained by a Narragansett fisherman who will one day testify he's known Gilbert since at least nineteen fifty.
Does make does make a lot of names in this episode, but you guys, you know, we try to steer clear of of too many, but these guys all play a role and they're all super interesting.
A couple of days before the fourth, Gilbert sits down with the guy and two crewmen and lays it out.

One of the crewmen is a local named Michael Celaberto, and Celaberto is gonna end up the single most important set of eyes in this story, and also its most complicated witness.
