What follows, it does depend.
What follows is a surveillance operation that involves tapping the Kukielski phone line with what's called the pen register from the deck of Coffee's own backyard.
So that means they can he they can't hear the actual voices, like the calls, but they can see every number dialed from the phone.
Coffee plus two D agents who show up in lawn chairs to monitor the situation, while Coffee's wife cooks the feds hamburgers and hot dogs, they sit on his deck.
They soon see that the phone line is
used to basically call the entire world, including cities that just happen to match the travel schedules later on of Stuart Newton's aliases.
One call books a New York helicopter firm for $6,000 to pluck Nicholas off a freighter sitting off the Virginia coast and set him down in his own backyard, which I mean, almost definitely one of the Virginia loads coming in, right?
No.
No, definitely not rugs.
Meanwhile, Nicholas has developed a bit of a heroin problem, and his marriage is coming apart because of it.
It actually starts from a legit prescription for painkillers, and a year later, he's shooting up coke and heroin.
Soon enough, he starts getting arrested for little things like possession, getting into car accidents.
Kind of see where this is going.
Coffee, by the way, has stayed on the case long after DEA is kind of thrown in the towel.
But he alerts them to what's been happening with Kukielsky, and eventually, Coffee and the DEA.
knock on the door, knock on Kukielski's door, and start trying to bluff their way to confession of sorts.
And his wife Sharon, who is like at the end of her rope,
starts to talk to the small town cop.
The story differs on who initiates the contact.
Some people say she calls Coffee, some people say the investigators call her, but the outcome is the same.
