But the next turning point for him
was the night he was taken from his mother.
And one night in early July 1793, they can hear the dreaded sounds of the guards approaching the steps to their door.
They came into the room and they read out a decree that the son of Capet, as they call him, was to be immediately separated from his mother.
And Marie Antoinette was just utterly beside herself.
And of course, Louis Charles flings himself into her arms and begs not to be separated.
And she won't let the guards get to her son.
She just says, you're going to have to kill me first.
And eventually they literally drag him from her.
Yeah, I found it incredibly upsetting when I wrote about it, because I'd always thought of the French Revolution as this, you know, good thing that wiped away
the feudal system and the incredibly unjust system, which had millions of French people, you know, barely able to feed themselves.
But when you look at the actual cruelty that the revolutionary leaders inflicted on them, it seems positively barbaric.
Louis Charles is moved into solitary confinement and effectively entombed alive and sort of weeks passed in this abject misery.
And the little boy himself just said he wanted to die.
It is really horrible.
I was moved to tears when I read the historical records.
And finally the cell was opened up and a doctor was sent in.
He could barely believe what he was seeing.
This was a child that wouldn't move and could barely walk.
The transformation was so total that, of course, stories immediately started to spread that the real Prince had escaped.
