That's where it gets even more complicated.
So we know, as Pierre Lebrun talked about, tweeted earlier today, that Sonny Mehta has been given permission to interview with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils.
Okay, he's the AGM in Florida, for those who don't know, and he's the head of their analytics department.
He doesn't have a wealth of hands-on hockey experience.
So does it make sense then to either have an overseer again, whomever that is.
Mike Gillis' name has been tossed out there in a speculative fashion.
But at least there's a guy with some hockey chops, right?
Hasn't been around in a decade.
But the history of Gillis, I mean, speaks to maybe...
Having that one-two punch and then filling out the hockey operations department with other hockey-specific people.
I got a little bit of pushback because I think it was on this show where I talked about how the Toronto Maple Leafs
Analytics department is second to none in terms of the resources poured into it and the size of the department, right?
And that's true, that's true.
I think it was misconstrued how I said that and what I meant because it's pretty obvious that that department and its services weren't utilized.
to the level of approval of Keith Pelley, right?
So I think that they'll probably, in some way, rebuild that department a little bit.
By the end of the day, it's still going to come down to hockey decisions, right?
Every decision they make will have a data attachment to it, player by player, all of that.
But that's not a lot different than what a lot of clubs are doing right now.
