And when you're able to achieve that, when you're able to get to a place where, because America had a reputation, it's not perfect, especially in what we used to call the third world, but had a reputation that we might get carried away in a counterinsurgency say, we may in a total war, like the second world war,
drive ourselves to the point that we're firebombing cities, but there are still certain basic rules of fairness.
Like you don't start a war of aggression with a sneak attack in the middle of negotiations that people would have said, yeah, but America wouldn't do that.
Even our enemies would have said that.
And when you have achieved that, when you've gotten to a place where that really is true of your people, that's something that you really have to hold on to because the minute you let go of it, you let go of that bar, that ledge, you start falling down into that very dark place.
Right, and our civilization is, you know, emergent from our collective quality in that sense.
You know, how individuals see themselves, you know, the sum of all those self-perceptions adds up to, you know, to a society and a civilization eventually and the direction that it's going to take.
And when you stop seeing and treating people
people you're in conflict with as human beings and see them just purely as a material obstacle to whatever goal you've set for yourself,
you know, suggest that... And at first trying to deny that it was us.
I mean, it's just... If I was the emperor of the United States and I could... You'd have to be the emperor because if you're an elected official, our system just doesn't... It's not built to incentivize this kind of behavior.
You could stay at war with Iran, fine, if there are reasons to be at war.
I would offer restitution to the families of those girls.
In the middle of the war, I would do it.
And I think that kind of thing goes a long way.
Yeah, I would think about, you know, I think about this a lot.
One time when I was still with the DOD, I was out training a ship's crew on their missile defense system and, or their air defense system.
This was maybe, it must've been 2019 or early 2020, just before COVID, because it was, everybody's talking about the election that was coming up.
And I remember one of the kids on the ship was 17 years old.
You know, his parents had to sign on the dotted line to let him get in at under 18 years old.
