Now police caught wind of this and obtained a warrant for Heydrich's arrest.
They booked him into jail on charges including burglary, theft, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
The media that had so eagerly put Heydrich on front pages and primetime TV ignored all of this.
And that allowed Heydrich to spin the story, telling his supporters he had simply received a stereo from the boys as a gift, not realizing it was stolen.
Heydrich bailed out of jail, and while awaiting trial traveled to Georgia, where he was arrested and escaped from custody.
He then returned to Utah where he cut a plea deal.
Finally, in September of 1982, a judge sentenced Heydrich to five years in the Utah State Prison.
That should have been the end of it.
But of course.
It wasn't.
The Salt Lake Tribune published a tiny blurb in its back pages on Sunday, october twenty fourth, nineteen eighty two.
It said an inmate at the Utah State Prison had escaped from the minimum security wing by scaling a fence.
That inmate was James Heydrich.

Heydrich would later say friends gave him cash for a plane ticket which he used to travel to South Carolina.
Now, because Heydrich left Utah, the FBI took over the search.
In December, agents learned he was in the vicinity of Lawrence, midway between Columbia and Greenville.
They mounted a search, but Bloodhounds lost Heydrich's scent in the woods.
Heydrich could outrun the cops, but not his own reputation.
