Four years after getting out of the Utah State prison, James Heydrich found himself living in Los Angeles.
He spent his days performing martial arts on the beach boardwalks.
The magazine, Inside Kung Fu, put Heydrich on its cover with the words, quote, No guard could break him.
No prison could hold him.
I am more comfortable with children, the magazine quoted Heydrich as saying, quote, some people think it's not normal for a 29-year-old to prefer the company of children to adults, unless you understand my past.
Police in California agreed Heydrich's interest in boys was not normal.
They were investigating him for molesting several boys between the ages of ten and fifteen.
Prosecutors in Huntington Beach filed formal charges in 1989, including 13 felony counts of child sex abuse.
They accused Heydrich of using his martial arts to lure in boys, grooming them by giving them food, drugs, and kung fu training in exchange for sex.
Heydrich cut a plea deal in August of 1989 and received a sentence of up to 17 years in prison.
He served that time, but is still in custody today.
