East Leighton was at the time a quiet agricultural community, sandwiched between the Great Salt Lake on one side and the Wasatch Mountains on the other.
So Nancy's childhood playgrounds were the open orchards around her house and the mountain slopes beyond.
On weekends, Nancy's parents would pack their kids up and take them camping in Utah's deserts.
And they were big into rocks.
Rock hounds.
Nancy's dad collected geodes and other minerals, using them to make handcrafted belt buckles and bolo ties.
Now I don't know how into this Nancy was, but she must have been dragged along on a rock hunt or two as a little girl.
Nancy was about eleven when her family moved to East Leighton,
sixth grade.
Nancy made an important friendship at school with a classmate named Geraldine.
Actually, Nancy made two important friendships.

She's pretty carefree.

Really friendly.
Not only were these three girls in the same grade, we all went to church together as well.
Their families were also members of the same religion.
So in this small town with a population numbered in the hundreds, Nancy, Geraldine, and Shelley were bound to become friends, almost by default.
Life in East Leighton lacked much excitement for three young girls.
