The institutional impact is far greater than the individual surgeon's impact.
So what's the split here between the institutional contribution and the individual surgeon contribution?
Probably about seventy percent to the institution, thirty percent to the surgeon.
So for complex cancer surgery such as pancreas cancer or esophageal cancer, it's actually the team.
It's the anaesthetist, the physiotherapist, the dietitian, as well as the surgeon.
And it's the team and environment in which that team works that really dictates great outcomes.
So what did you find with esophageal and pancreatic cancer?
We have found variation in all of those key indices.
We are seeing, most importantly, differences in survival.
And those differences are being reported for the first time in Australia for pancreatic cancer surgery and for just the second time for esophageal cancer surgery.
And how big is the difference?
We're seeing a twofold difference in thirty and ninety day mortality.
But importantly we're also seeing some differences at one year.
Suggest they're not getting it all out?
Well, it's complex, but we can't simply say that it's not getting it all out.
And that's again where the clinical cancer registry over the next eighteen months is going to give us the detail that helps us to understand how to get the system to work better.
Same order of magnitude and this is exactly what has been reported overseas.

And we're now looking at lung cancer.
