And so the really important question for patients and their families to ask is how many of these procedures have been done in this hospital this year?
How many of these procedures have been done in the state this year?
If it's two procedures that have been done of four that have been done in the state, that's great.
But if it's two procedures at this institution and there are four thousand that were done in the state,
Then you may want to look to a place that has a bigger caseload, and that may not be a big hospital.
Can they tell you?
Do these hospitals have those statistics?
Hospitals know about their own throughput.
They may not know until now about their own performance, but they know about the number of cases that they're seeing.
And what about public versus private hospitals?
Absolutely no difference.
So we're seeing the same variation across the system in
in terms of the number of procedures being done, from very, very small numbers to robust numbers where we can have confidence that we are delivering the very best outcomes.
Two points to make there.
Firstly, we need to get that right.
We need the right person to get the operation and the right person to not get the operation also.
And the clinical cancer registry is going to let us do that for the first time.
That's a very complex figure to get when such small numbers are involved across the state.
So we're looking to the clinical cancer registry to help us understand exactly that process.
The second point to make is that as we think about ensuring that the right people are getting the operation at the right time, multidisciplinary teams are something that we continue to provide support for across the state.
