What I do know more than anything else is that my surgical colleagues want the very best outcomes for their patients.
And as we've worked with surgeons the response has been incredibly positive.
So why aren't you telling the public which hospitals are the ones which aren't doing badly?
The numbers are very small.
The numbers are so small that we will see a lot of statistical noise around those numbers and we need to work at a systems level to improve things.
But don't you think the public's got a right to know?
The most important thing is that we are responding here and we're improving the health system.
We've made these measurements, we've got these findings, and we're working with surgeons, health funders, health planners to ensure that there's a response.
Wouldn't pressure from the public speed the change up?
As I said, it's a community conversation, and I expect that there will be public pressure to ensure that the caseload of a number of hospitals across the state is sufficient to ensure the very best outcomes.
And in practice,
Terms, for esophageal cancer surgery, we may be looking at five centers rather than twenty-five.
It's not about revolution, it's about evolution.
And what we're doing here is measuring our performance.
It takes a courageous health system to measure its performance, to make those data public, and to work with the whole community in understanding where we need to make these changes.
We did this in Burns 20 years ago.
We've done it
in childhood cancers and we're proposing.
Absolutely.
And we're proposing to do this in a very small number of cancers which require complex team based therapy in order to get the best outcomes.
