And these things were done with watercolour on vellum.
Now, vellum is calfskin.
And when I read that before I went in, I thought that's a bit of an affectation.
Who paints on vellum?
But actually, when you see the works...
Paper absorbs color and pigment, where vellum upholds it in a completely different way.
There's a luminosity.
So these are exquisite things, and I use the word in its true sense.
And there's a sense of mortality that's born on these solitary leaves that he's picked off the street.
And he died a tragic death.
He got very, very ill.
And it's hard not to read a little bit of that end story into the final pictures.
But they are truly extraordinary things.
They could be put on display in any museum in the world next to the Mona Lisa or Titian, whatever you want, and Rembrandt.
And they'll stand up next to them.
This is high art.
They're amazing things.
