These are best used in conjunction with cohort retention curves.
Cohort retention curves teach you in aggregate whether groups of users that you acquire stick with you over time.
That's very important.
You should definitely be measuring that.
But the dot plot shows you how those users are actually using your product, and they give you the color to go ask the right questions of your users, to go build the right features, to fix things that are broken in your product that you would never learn by looking at aggregate metrics.
So cohort retention curves and dot plots are, in my experience, two of the most important tools that you've got to understand your users.
