It reminded me of seeing Jurassic Park a few years ago.
I had two black cats, and before I saw Jurassic Park, they were two black cats.
But then after I saw Jurassic Park, I was suddenly aware of sentient beings in my house that weren't human.
suddenly the meaning of having cats wandering freely around the home meant something different.
And so what I was aware of with reading Tell Me Everything was that suddenly my travel, my daily interactions on the street changed because there's something about that style of storytelling that makes you wonder what people are saying to each other and makes you question who they are.
So I was surprised and a little bit disappointed, dare I say, to discover that it's from the Elizabeth Strout universe.
So these are characters that she has introduced before.
But I do also like the idea that she invented Shirley Falls and Crosby, Maine, and that she goes back there to tell stories and that one day after the fact it occurred to her,
that all of these people lived in the same place and why was it that they'd never met?
So this is the book where they all meet.
It's an interesting point you make because I at first thought that Lucy might be Elizabeth.
But I don't think that you could really place Olive to one side.
Because I think that Olive is all of us.
The fact that she meets Lucy regularly to exchange these stories about, what does she call them?
A certain kind of unrecorded lives?
Yeah.
And then there's a section where she's at a party and she's just quite content to just sit there and look at everybody and observe.
And then you have all the observations that she's making while she's speaking to Lucy and they're not all friendly.
And Strout's quite comfortable letting you know the negativity that Olive might be feeling.
But I don't think... I think she knits everything together.
