Yeah, I like the contrast between Hilltop and Lomor, the menace of Lomor.

Made me think about Shady Pines and the Golden Girls.

The place that you get demoted to.

kind of like a heaven and hell.

But then there's a wonderful apocalyptic section where they're all going around gathering wooden furniture for a bonfire and the people of Lomor looking up at the fire and wondering what it is that they're celebrating.

It's really nice to see a 90-year-old author describing the dystopia in a way that doesn't get privileged by lots of other authors.

It's often action or a lot more youthful, but we don't often think about what it is that the elderly in that sort of setting will do when everything appears to break down.

And the death of Nelson, yes.

There's a nice synergy as well between the two books, this killing time, because during the pandemic, one of the thoughts in a reader's head would have been, what is the pandemic writing going to be?

And we've got two examples of that in the collection this week.

Yeah, there's that line about every birthday being special after a certain age.

Yeah, not mattering anymore.

The term Orwellian gets used a lot these days, and it seems to me that Orwellian means 1984ian, really.

And I read 1984 and Animal Farm at school decades ago.

And this was the year where I decided I had to up my Orwell game and really read some more Orwell.

And so I went for his first novel, which is not his first book, but it's his first novel.

And it's called Burmese Days.

And it's inspired by his time in Burma, part of the crown rule during the British Raj in the 1920s.

It's a huge revelation of the book, I would say.

I had exactly the same feeling.
