How does a breakaway work?

It's really interesting because it's totally dependent on the stage.

I think we heard, it was Quinn Simmons who said, there are 50 riders here who are capable of winning a breakaway stage, or at least being up there in the mix.

But those 50 riders, they're kind of tailor-made for stages like today, where they're up and down, they're not pure mountains, they haven't got a mountain at the finish, it's not a sprint, big bunch sprint potential, so they're going for those ones.

Now often that means that to get in the break is going to be a battle and that's kind of the hardest part of the race often is getting in the break because if you think of those 50 riders probably at this point probably about 15 of those riders will make it into the break the other 15 will be miscellaneous kind of not really capable of winning and then once you're in there you're sort of looking around and trying to decide

we need to whittle this down and who do I want to kind of, who are the guys I want to go with?

This is the kind of game theory one, because often the guys you want to go with are the ones that are going to be the most challenging to beat.

That they want some strong riders to go with them.

Why?

Yeah.

You're not looking at that group of 30 and thinking, right, there's 15 guys here that are difficult to beat, but there's 15 guys I can nail down.

But then at the same time, I don't want any of those 15 guys to come with me because we won't make it.

So there's that point in the race where you're having to form alliances with kind of, you basically, with the strongest guys, you're not necessarily speaking to them, but you're keeping an eye on them.

And sometimes...

you'll know, you'll sort of sense you'll be near each other where it's getting like 60 or 80 Ks in, 50 Ks in the finish maybe.

You're thinking, right, I know that they're going to go soon.

I've got to keep an eye on them.

Or I'm going to go and I need to make sure that they're near me.

And so you kind of form that.

But once you've got into that group, let's say the definitive group, let's go back to the stage of Vanderpool.
