The jury awarded damages to the Foxes for false arrest and other claims, but not conspiracy or false imprisonment.
An appeals court later reduced the amount to about $8 million.
Many of the officers involved in the Riley Fox case went on to have long careers with the Will County Sheriff's Department.
In June of 2009, five years after the death of Riley Fox, the case gets a jolt of new energy when the FBI sends a team to Wilmington and starts an investigation from scratch.
