Is that what you mean when you say that the way jokes operate is something that influences the way you write poetry?
Well, before we finish, I did want to touch at least briefly on process, especially because so many people listening are writers or aspiring writers.
The ways that you engage with visual art in the book, because I think the ways you engage with visual art and your process seem to be connected.
And you have this conversation with Vivian Lee, and as a random weird aside, I don't know her, but we're in the same fantasy basketball league.

It's her first year, and that doesn't usually go well for someone who's their first year in our league, and she did great.
So in your conversation with Vivian Lee, you talk about your process of writing as a form of translation, that you'll see an image and ask yourself, what would that image look like as a poem?
Or what would your apartment look like if it were a poem?
And the book is populated by images, the photograph of Diana Ross eating ribs and also the visual artist's
Ligon and Piper.
And you've also talked about how you love aesthetics and you have lots of art books.
And you've said in describing your process, there isn't really a sense making in the poem itself.
It's more just a painting of an emotion.
And you've also talked about your process in spatial ways and talking about taking things that you intuit should go together, but you don't know how they
together.
And then so the process of the poem is connecting these things and finding how they do.
