So this is a Darley and Batson study from 1973. podcast-host

So this was a study in the grand tradition of what has been called situationism. podcast-host

The argument being that what predicts people's behavior, in this case, what predicts people's prosocial behavior? podcast-host

Um, their willingness to help out strangers specifically. podcast-host

Is it something about their personality? podcast-host

Is it about their character? podcast-host

Or is the situation strong enough to just, you know, like a leaf in the wind to just push people one way or the other? podcast-host

And so Darley and Batson designed this study where they had podcast-host

Seminary students, this people studying to be Christian pastors, they were asked to give a talk on the other side of campus based on the parable in the New Testament by Jesus on the Good Samaritan. podcast-host

A parable that is all about a man who stops and sees an injured person, an injured person who was part of his outgroup, and helps him at cost to himself, even when the holy man, the people who were supposed to have been the helpers and the good people, walked right by him and paid him no mind. podcast-host

And so this study was meant to mimic something like that. podcast-host

As they were walking from one part of the campus to the other to deliver this sermon, podcast-host

They actually planted a person who was visibly injured, moaning, asking for help. podcast-host
