I'm working with money all the time.

And so that's when I decided, oh.

Debbie, you really need to figure this out now.

So that's when I started, I bought some books, really understanding simple investment plans.

I am a 100% firm believer in market tracking indices.

Like I took back, my husband and I had an investment advisor who was managing some of our portfolio at the time.

I looked at that and I noticed that they were churning our account.

Meaning buying and selling and buying and selling and buying and selling, because every one of those trades, buys and sells, gets them a little bit of commission.

And most people, including me at that time, first of all, big family, working hard, don't have time to look at our financial statements.

I have this sneaky suspicion that all of those financial statements are written in small print with lots of numbers, lots of rows, and lots of columns so that you don't look.

And at the end, it just gives you your portfolio grew by $5,367 this month.

And you're like, oh, I made so much money or this year, whatever.

But you don't have a benchmark for comparison.

Is your $5,000 a good return or a bad return?

People are like, look, my broker, he made me $5,000.

But you know what?

Maybe if you had been invested in just a market tracking index fund that tracked the S&P 500, maybe you would have made 20.

How can you even say that he's doing good for you if you don't know how to compare it and what to compare it with?

And that was something that I'd learned on Wall Street because we always had to do comparisons because you could finance your production facility like this or you could do it like that.

So I understood the concept of comparing.
